Henry’s Fences

Landscape photography by Kåre Gade

Tordentræ, Sejerø 2021

Monday-Friday 11.00 am – 4.00 pm

Saturday-Sunday 10.00 am – 2.00 pm

Sejerø Kulturforening repeats last year’s wellattended exhibition, featuring a new series of photos as well as the recently published photo book “Henrys hegn – et dansk ølandskab” (Henry’s Fences – a Danish Island Landscape).

About the exhibition

The landscape on the southeast of Sejerø is distinctive and varied: The steep cliffs on the north side of Bjerget (“The Mountain”), the grassy meadow on Øren, the pebbles on Revet. Yet the different features are tied together by the characteristic fences – next to the road, over the hills and along the coast.

Many of these fences were established by local farmer Henry Larsen and his predecessors at Kongshøjgård.

Kåre Gade has photographed the fences through the changing seasons. In the early morning light and in dusk. In sunny and cloudy weather, in rain, wind, snow, fog and frost. There are no people in the pictures. Nevertheless, it is a tale of man and nature – and of the landscape created in the meeting between the two.

“The book is the direct opposite of the touristy brochures which you will find at petrol stations along the motorways that connect Denmark. “Henrys hegn” does not attempt to sell anything. The book tells a story about a place in Denmark which exists by virtue of its history and the care of the people who use the landscape.” ****

"Inspired and beautiful in equal measure"

Architect and urban planner Jan Gehl on “Henry’s Fences”:

“I have spent all my summers on Sejerø where my parents built a summer house, which still belongs to the family. In “Henry’s Fences” Kåre Gade reflects upon the interaction between man and nature, portraying the islanders care and love for Sejerø. A beautiful anthem for a tiny, tough spot in Denmark.”
